As cyber criminals start the process of identity theft, they will also attempt to compromise all of your other online accounts. But if they fail to guess your passwords, they will try to reset them.This means that you will receive password reset emails that you never asked for.

If you are using the 2 Factor Authentication to log into your accounts, you will also receive reset messages or push notifications on your smartphone.

  • Unexpected bills and invoices

When cyber criminals steal identities, they sometimes use it to set up new credit accounts with lenders and retailers. Once the billing begins, the identity theft victims receive the paperwork either on email or through the post office.

Always check the bills before paying them. If you receive a bill you don’t recognize, you should contact the retailer or the lender right away. Also, ensure that the received invoice is legitimate and it’s not a phishing email before you open any links inside.

  • Debt collector calls

One of the scariest things that can happen is receiving a call from a debt collector for unpaid bills for purchases you have never made. If a debt collector contacts you, make sure to check your credit report as soon as possible and notify them about any irregularities. You will also need to notify the police as well.

Cyber criminals always find a way to conduct identity theft attacks. Despite the fact that these criminals will first target online stores and banks, that doesn’t mean that your devices are safe from any hacking attempts.
